St Nicholas is a friendly, traditional Church of England parish church the diocese of York.
People of all ages are welcome at all our services, which are held in our beautiful and historic church building on Church Street.
Our priest in charge has the distinguished title of Rector –some parish priests in the Church of England are called by this term while others are called vicars. Historically, the distinction was that a rector directly received the tithes of his parish, while a vicar was paid a salary. The term is also used to designate the priest in charge of a team ministry.
The Rector is supported in his ministry by an Assistant Curate, Honorary Assistant Clergy and a small team of Eucharistic Ministers (Readers). Readers are lay people in the Church of England, from all walks of life, who are called by God, theologically trained and licensed by the Church to preach, teach, lead worship and assist in pastoral, evangelistic and liturgical work.
We also run a number of active groups and activities – details of which you will find in the Groups and Diary sections of these web pages.
The Parish is ‘managed’ through the Parochial Church Council (generally known as the PCC) and a number of groups and committees dealing with various aspects associated with the running of the church. These include a Standing Committee, Finance Committee, Fabric Committee (effectively ‘buildings and contents’), Fellowship Group & Communications Group.
The church has a strong musical tradition which is reflected in the structure and content of the weekly services of Family Communion and Evensong, and we have an enthusiastic group of servers of all ages who perform important parts of the Church Sunday ritual.
