Report

The Parish Pantomime Group’s production of Cinderella in January was watched by a record-breaking 1,053 people. As a result, the group, which was established in 1974 and over the last 34 years has performed an annual pantomime in the Parish Hall on Bow Street in the first or second week in January, decided that money from the bumper proceeds should be offered to help the town’s schools host drama productions.

The group, whose members are as young as eight, has offered each of the five primary schools in the town up to £100 to help put on a school drama production, or hire in drama companies with key educational messages attached to the tales they tell. The town’s secondary school, Laurence Jackson, has received the offer of up to £200 under similar conditions.

Phil Sandford, chairman, said: “So many of our talented group have either been a pupil at one or two of the schools or are there now and we felt it only right that after recording our most successful year yet, we encourage more youngsters to appreciate, and get involved in, drama. We are an amateur group and need a certain amount of money to use for the following year’s costumes and set, but as the town supported us so well we felt it only right to make these grants.”

Meanwhile, rehearsals are in full swing for ‘Snow White’, by Norman Robbins, which will be performed as usual in the Parish Hall, Bow Street between Monday 12 January and Saturday 17 January 2009, each evening at 7pm with a Saturday matinee at 2pm. Tickets are now available from Greensleeves Music in Chaloner Street. They are priced £5.50 and £4.50 for adults, while tickets for those under 12 and over 65 are £5 and £4.

Phil Sandford
